Greetings BAIS Families, It's been a while! I'm thrilled to be back for my third year of art-making and learning with the creative community at BAIS. Every one of our students-- from Prek to 8th grade-- has two 42 minute periods of visual arts instruction per week. During this time, students learn about art and artists from different cultures and historical periods, experiment with two and three dimensional media, and hone important habits and skills that encourage them to be creative problem-solvers, innovative thinkers, and lifelong learners. Our arts curriculum is aligned with the Aero Visual Arts standards and emphasizes the Studio Habits of Mind, a set of eight dispositions that encourage students to think about why and how artists work the way they do (from Studio Thinking. Hetland, Winner, et al. Teachers College Press, 2007). The Studio Habits of Mind offer a language for critical thinking that spans across every subject area. Throughout the year, students will explore cross-disciplinary themes such as community, identity, environment, and change. Students will build artistic confidence and technical skill while developing art knowledge and appreciation through the exploration of these big ideas. Displays of student work will be exhibited in the art room and in the library, so be sure to stop by and see them throughout the year. You can also visit this website for regular updates about our adventures in the art room and view more examples of student work in our online gallery. Thank you for supporting visual arts education at BAIS! I’mI’m looking forward to another incredible school year with our students.
