Greetings BAIS Commuity! We’ve had a wonderful start to the new year in the art room. Our upper primary and middle school students kicked off 2018 with a fantastic comics workshop with Ms. Katharine Houpt, an artist, art therapist, and educator who lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Katharine is a lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she teaches a Comic Narratives course to undergraduate and graduate students. She shared some of her favorite activities and helped BAIS artists begin exploring the unique features of comics as an art form.
Students created avatars for themselves using simple shapes in the style of cartoonist Ivan Brunetti, experimented with storytelling using text and images, and drew collaborative “Jam Comics” that helped them build an understanding of how to tell an effective visual story. They’ve continued building on the characters, stories, and skills developed in the initial workshop and will be creating a six-panel mini comic to share in the next couple of weeks.
Our youngest artists have been creating some comic art of their own and are using it as a way to explore their own interests and unique identities. They’re also continuing to practice their technique while experimenting with different art elements, methods, and mediums at our choice-based art centers, where they can practice with water colors, mixed-media collage, oil pastels and clay!
